Christmas Songs, Christmas Covers

Containing the only version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” I can actually tolerate!

My family was never particularly religious, but we always celebrated Christmas. And one of our favourite holiday traditions was playing Christmas carols.

While some Christmas songs are so irritating that I practically punch holes in my car’s dashboard attempting to change the station, others are so beautiful I would happily listen to them all year. What I’ve noticed, though, is that I’m just as particular about the version of the song as I am about the song itself.

Take “The Christmas Song,” for example – it’s Nat King Cole or nothin’. And as far as I’m concerned, there is only one version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” It’s sung by Rod Stewart and Dollie Parton, and is so perfectly acted you can watch the entire scene unfold in your mind.

Then there’s Josh Groban’s cover of “Oh Holy Night,” which brings me to tears every time I hear it. I can’t have a Christmas without it.

What about you? Love Christmas music? Hate it? What are some of your favourite songs and versions?
