A Request for Hollywood

August 13, 2016

Is anyone else getting a little tired of superhero movies? With the exception of next year’s Wonder Woman, which not only looks awesome, but puts a female hero in a starring role, I am getting pretty burnt out on the whole genre.

There is a sub-category of movie I would really like to see more of, though. A category no man would identify as “chick flick,” but which women everywhere find tremendously appealing: movies in which men with long hair and weapons run through the wilderness.

Movies like these:

Willow (1988)

Even when falling on his butt, Val Kilmer is completely adorable.  Plus, he’s 50% responsible for one of the best love scenes ever filmed, in terms of both insane chemistry and sheer hilarity. A fabulous movie all around.

Last of the Mohicans (1992)

As if Daniel Day Lewis weren’t enough, this movie also has one of the best soundtracks ever recorded.  It’s one of my favorite albums to write to.

The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

Personally, I prefer Aragorn’s tortured soul to Legolas’s eye candy, but every hero needs a sidekick or two. The sweeping New Zealand landscape doesn’t hurt either.

What’s your favourite “men with weapons” movie? Any other genres you wish Hollywood would devote more effort to?

  1. I am with you on the soundtrack of The Last of the Mohicans. Amazing music. And also, if I never saw another superhero movie, I’d be happy. Anything based on a comic book!

    1. I really love how that music evokes the sweeping landscape and the scale of the story.

  2. I would prefer if movies didn’t run in current-bandwagon cycles, but we had a healthy spread of different kinds of movies instead, including some unique and original ones.

    1. I would also appreciate some variety. It does seem like Hollywood (and publishers) chase a lot of trends.

  3. I agree with you on Aragorn and the “sweeping New Zealand landscape,” although Aragorn will always be the better eye candy and more (tortured soul, etc.).
