Now, More Than Ever, We Cannot Forget

November 11, 2016

My grandfather - a veteran of the Korean war.

My grandfather – a veteran of the Korean war.

A lot of us have had a really rough week.

A lot of us are wondering what a Trump presidency is going to mean for us, and for our family and friends, and for the world at large. For every person excited by his victory, there’s at least one who’s consumed with fear for the future.

Now, more than ever, we need to remember the past.

It’s Remembrance Day in Canada. A day we reflect on the wars our nation has fought… a day we recognize those who fought so we would not have to. They fought for freedom – freedom for everyone, not just a chosen few. They protected those who did not have the power to protect themselves. They died so that we would not have to live in fear.

We must remember this. We must honour their sacrifice, not one day a year, but every day of our lives. We must stand up and speak out and earn the better world our fallen soldiers paid for in blood.

Once more unto the breach, my friends. Fight for truth and justice and freedom and equality. For us, and for our children, and for those who’ve gone before.

Do not forget.
