Teens React to Encyclopedias

August 13, 2015

The video’s a bit long, but it’s worth watching the whole thing, especially if you (like me) fondly remember paper encyclopedias. It’s really incredible how quickly our relationship with information has changed (and will continue to change). For my part as a science writer, I honestly have no idea how people found journal articles or newspaper pieces before the age of the internet. I don’t think I could make half my deadlines without it!

Kudos to the teens in the video for recognizing the pitfalls of both information sources! I spend a lot of time talking about that very issue in my day job at the Writing Centre of Saint Mary’s University!

Where do you go for information these days? Do you remember encyclopedias and card catalogues? Do you prefer them over Google?
