Man Musicals: Guaranteed to Cure the Melancholies

May 24, 2014

Fiddler on the roofI love musicals. I love the singing and the inexplicably synchronized dance numbers and the bigger-than-life stories. They fill me with happy.

Tech Support, not so convinced. In fact, I have to give him three days’ warning before my annual re-watch of The Sound of Music, so he can plan to leave the house.

There are, however, certain musicals that men (and by “men,” I refer to a highly-scientific sample consisting of Tech Support and my dad) absolutely love. One, of course, is Fiddler on the Roof, due to Tevye’s dry humour and rousing rendition of “If I Were a Rich Man,” guaranteed to get all the men in my sample shaking their respective booties in a spontaneous dance-along.

The other is Paint Your Wagon, a musical about the California gold Paint Your Wagonrush, starring a bunch of disreputable guys looking for money, liquor, and women. Including Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood.

My eyebrows just about popped off the top of my head at the Clint Eastwood part, but he’s actually got a pretty good voice on him. Not as good as Harve Presnell (“Rotten Luck Willie”), who sings “They Call the Wind Mariah,” but respectable all the same.

Tech Support loves Paint Your Wagon so much, he walks around saying “I have the melancholies” anytime it’s been a rough day. To the point where I informed him that if he handles his melancholies the same way Lee Marvin does, I will NOT be showing up with a donkey to haul his inebriated self out of the muddy streets and bring him home.

Lee Marvin

Instead, he should just watch another musical. 🙂

What’s your opinion on musicals – love ’em or hate ’em? What’s your favourite, and is it adored by both women and men? Suggestions are welcome!

  2. My tech support guy loves Gone With the Wind. Me, not so much. We both like Fiddler on The Roof. Neither of us have seen Paint Your Wagon, so you’ve given us an idea of one to watch.
