How to Grow A Burger in the Lab

Guess we won’t be needing you anymore…

I can’t post the video here for copyright reasons, but you should all go to the BBC right now and watch this incredible video about a lab that’s growing edible burgers from cow stem cells.

Then come back here and tell me what you think about this. Is it a major scientific advance that will protect the environment and end world hunger? Do you already avoid GMO foods, and this is way too Frankenstein for you? Will the ability to grow our own protein help make interstellar travel possible?

Would you eat the burger?

  1. Wow, you are quick off the mark, Lindsey. I only heard about this today.
I think that like any synthetic replacement, meat-from-the-hoof will become a luxury item, and the masses will eat synth. I can see a future in which a McDonald’s burger is a luxury item.

    1. Hubs sent me the link and it was perfect timing!

I’m still not sure how I feel about this development. The rational, intellectual side of my brain understands that there’s no practical difference in the meat itself, and that lab-grown has the potential to be faster and better, for the animals and the environment. But the emotional side finds the whole notion kind of squicky. Even though I’m not a fan of the existing feed lot system, and most days I only eat meat because I’m allergic to everything else… More thinking needed!
