Solstice But Not Summer

Summer is the season for ice cream – provided you’re not already shivering.

It’s summer solstice today, but apparently not summer, at least not in Nova Scotia. The most hours of daylight of the year doesn’t actually help if the sun’s not shining.

It’s been cool and rainy for weeks and let’s just say I’d trade this for the heat wave in Arizona any day. Wearing a sweater and slippers – indoors – on the first day of summer just plain feels wrong to me.

But my rhododendrons are blooming, and the For Sale sign in my front yard is flapping, scaring the deer away from my lilies. One or two of them might survive long enough to flower this year. So it’s not all bad.

How is summer where you are?

  1. Sounds nasty. It hasn’t been great here in Edmonton, Alberta — coolish most days (after all the warm days in winter), way too much wind, considerable rain, though we are blessed with some sunshine.

Solstice is a tricky time. It’s when we can enjoy light from 5:04 a.m. to 10:07 p.m., which means you can add at least 45 minutes of light at each end of the day, but it’s all for nothing if it’s cloudy and rainy (dark)!

  2. LE – Have you ever been in the SW USA in the summer? You would never trade a rainy cool day for that! I dare you to even drive through Arizona, west Texas or Nevada in SUMMER.

    1. I’ve been to Texas in August many times, and I’d take it any day!

Apparently I am part cactus. 🙂
